Dr. Shanda Blackmon, professor of thoracic surgery at The Lung Institute at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, discusses what
prehabilitation for lung cancer surgery is and why it is important. She describes prehabilitation as
taking all the necessary steps before surgery to get your lungs into the healthiest shape possible in order to achieve the best outcome from your surgery. This involves taking several weeks before your surgery to
stop smoking to help your lungs heal, and learning to do different types of
breathing,
physical,
and mental exercises that will assist you with getting through surgery and afterwards during your recovery.
